Sugar Creek Limited Seasonal Release: White Oak Red Malt

Sugar Creek Limited Special Release:
White Oak Red Malt
Sugar Creek White Oak Smoked Red Wheat Malt is a limited seasonal release crafted from floor-malted red wheat and slowly smoked over Indiana white oak. The result is a refined smoked wheat malt with layered notes of soft oak smoke, toasted bread crust, light toffee, and subtle hints of vanilla and maple-like sweetness derived from the white oak smoking process.
Unlike heavier smoked malts that emphasize sharp phenolic smoke, white oak produces a smoother and more rounded smoke character that integrates cleanly into both traditional and modern beer styles. The red wheat base contributes a fuller wheat flavor, enhanced body, and strong head retention while allowing the smoke profile to remain elegant and balanced.
This malt is especially well suited for Grodziskie-inspired beers, smoked wheat ales, rauchbier-inspired lagers, farmhouse ales, smoked porters, and mixed fermentation styles. Lower usage rates contribute subtle oak-smoke complexity, while larger additions create a pronounced but refined smoky character without excessive harshness. Traditional Polish Grodziskie beers were historically brewed with oak-smoked wheat malt, making this malt particularly suitable for historical recreations.
As with many Sugar Creek specialty malts, this release highlights the maltster’s focus on traditional floor malting, regional grain sourcing, and experimental smoked malt production.

Rauchmalz is Back!
Sugar Creek Rauchmalz is a traditional German-style smoked malt crafted from floor-malted 2-row barley and dried over Indiana beech wood. Inspired by the classic rauchmalz malts of Bamberg, Germany, it delivers a smooth smoky character with notes of wood smoke, toasted bread crust, light caramel, and subtle hints of toffee.
Beechwood smoke creates a balanced and refined profile that integrates cleanly into both traditional and modern beer styles. Sugar Creek Rauchmalz retains enough enzymatic power to function as a base malt while contributing expressive smoke aroma and flavor even at smaller usage rates.
This malt is especially well suited for classic Rauchbier, smoked lagers, smoked porters, Scotch ales, and farmhouse-inspired styles. Lower percentages contribute subtle campfire and woodsmoke complexity, while larger additions create the rich savory smoke character associated with traditional Franconian smoked beers.
