Eraclea Pilsner malt is made from 2-row barley cultivated in the Eraclea region of Italy, outside of Venice. It performs especially well as a base for crisp, aromatic Mediterranean-style lagers. Eraclea will produce a pale straw-colored wort with lightly sweet honey notes. It will also support head retention.
Eraclea was a winter barley varietal developed by Saatgut Breun in the 1970s. It did not flourish in the humid growing conditions of Bavaria, but it thrived in the drier conditions of Italy's Adriatic coast. Eraclea has the ability to store its own moisture, allowing it to flourish in the unique terroir of long sunny days and arid conditions in this corner of Italy.
