PBW (Powdered Brewery Wash) is a buffered alkaline detergent developed by Five Star Chemicals and widely used in both home and commercial breweries. Its oxygen-based formula and blend of surfactants and chelating agents break down tough organic soils such as krausen rings, heat stone, hop resins, and protein films on stainless steel, glass, and many plastics.
PBW works effectively in both hard and soft water and at relatively low temperatures, so you do not need boiling water or extreme heat for good results. It is safe for use on stainless steel, glass, rubber, and most plastics when used as directed. Typical soak concentrations are around 1% by weight in warm water for general cleaning.
Use PBW as a soak for kettles, fermenters, kegs, and small parts, or run it through pumps and draft lines as part of your cleaning routine. Rinse thoroughly and follow with a no-rinse sanitizer such as Star San before putting equipment back into service.
